FALSE ACKNOWLEDGMENT/FORGERY
 
Effective January 1, 2006- The new law may make a notary public guilty of forgery if he or she issues an acknowledgment knowing it to be false.

 A person who falsifies the acknowledgment of a notary public may also be guilty of forgery.

Forgery is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison, or by imprisonment in the county jail for not more than one year. (False certification by a notary public is also a misdemeanor pursuant to

Government Code 6203)
